A 14-point effort by Jasmin Bell helped the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats defeat Winder-Barrow 45-27 Friday.
Ryan Burke added 11 points and eight rebounds for AHS while Zalandria Hill was 9-of-10 from the foul line. Bronwyn Wade finished with four points, but had an impressive 11 rebounds for the Lady Wildcats, who improved to 4-9 in Region 8-AAAAA and 7-12 overall.
“It was fun to see us play some good basketball,” said AHS coach Gary Compton. “It was also good for our seniors to get two wins against Winder-Barrow. Both teams had improved since the first meeting.”
Wade’s performance at the foul line was credited by her coach for her being able to draw fouls and then “make it count” at the free throw line.
The Lady Wildcats led 9-6 after the first quarter and 23-13 at halftime. AHS held a 14-point cushion after the third quarter. Tamaica Morrow finished with five points for the Lady Wildcats.
For the Lady Bulldoggs, Shea Mayweather led the way with seven points, while Courtney Hardigree added five. Shakari Smith scored four points, while Lakeisha Hall added three points and eight rebounds.
“We didn’t shoot the basketball well,” said WBHS coach Brandon Thomas. “They took away our inside game with their height.”
The Lady Bulldoggs, competing with a young squad this season, will battle on, their coach said.
“We will continue to encourage them,” Thomas said. “I was pleased with our effort. It was a case tonight of Ryan (Burke) dominating inside and us not having an answer for it.”
AHS will host Monroe Area Friday in a non-region title while WBHS will travel to Athens to face Cedar Shoals in a 8-AAAAA contest. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
