East Jackson wrestler Jeff Chandler came out as top dog in the heavyweight class at the Area 4-AAA tournament last weekend in Elbert County.
After wrestling his way through a bracket with top-notch talent from Banks County and Oconee County, Chandler earned a first-place finish, securing himself a number-one seed at AAA sectionals this weekend at Morgan County High School.
Eagle head coach Zach Morrison is confident that Chandler can wrestle his way through sectionals and on to the state tournament in Macon.
“The brackets really favor (Chandler), said Morrison. “Coach Pruitt and I think that Jeff should have a great upcoming weekend.”
Chandler, who is 40-2 on the season, is the lone wrestler to advance to sectionals from East Jackson. Alex Trejo (152 lb.), Hugo Eguairte (126 lb.) and Jacob Lindenmeyer (120 lb.) all earned sixth-place finishes in the tournament.
While the season is over for the rest of the Eagles, Morrison says he is proud of the way his young team progressed throughout the season.
“There are 13 teams in our area, so I was proud of how the guys finished the season,” he said. “As a team, we went in knowing we didn’t need to count team points because we are so young and usually compete better in dual tournaments. We will be returning all but three varsity wrestlers next season, and I see the guys really excelling and producing even more area placers next season.”
