Like other Georgia students who took the new Coordinate Algebra class last fall, Barrow County students struggled to adapt to that classes’ tougher standards. Some 52 percent of Apalachee High School students and 62 percent of Winder Barrow High School students failed the End of Course Test in the class last fall. The statewide failure rate was 59 percent. With one exception, however, Barrow students had a lower failure rate in other classes last fall on the EOCT than the overall state average. In 11th Grade Literature, AHS students failed at a higher rate than the state, 14 percent compared to 11 percent. Otherwise, Barrow students bested the state average. In comparison to last spring’s EOCT results, fall’s results were mixed for Barrow students. Students did better in seven of the results while doing worse in five. The statewide results have not yet been released so seeing how Barrow schools fared in comparison isn’t yet available.
