Commerce officials achieved a major milestone this week.
Mayor Clark Hill announced Monday night that the Department of Community Affairs approved the city’s request for “opportunity zone” status for most of its commercial district.
An initiative of the Downtown Development Authority, the declaration means that new businesses locating in the area – basically from B. Wilson Road south to the former Huddle House and Homer Road north to the old Twin Tanks location, including all of the downtown — can qualify for state withholding tax credits for every employee added after the first two full-time employees.
