Jefferson High School overcame an 18-point deficit Saturday to upset Greene County, 53-51, and win the region 8-AA title in Greensboro.
The Dragons (19-9) will host Kendrick High School (9-17) next week, probably Wednesday, in the first round of the state playoffs.
Tyler Patrick scored eight points in the final period to power the Dragons’ to their first lead of the game, 45-44, with less than four minutes to play.
Greene County regained the lead twice, but JHS did not yield. Satchel Turpin’s basket and a pair of Tay Taylor free throws put the Dragons ahead for good with 32 seconds left on the clock, with the Dragons successfully defending the Tigers' final shot.
Patrick led the team with 15 points, followed by Taylor, who finished with 13 points, including nine points that stabilized the team in the first half.
Turpin finished with 8. Willie Taylor (4), Jeshua Kidd (5), Isaiah Blake (5) and Roc Young (3) all contributed.
