Jefferson High School overcame an 18-point deficit Saturday to upset Greene County, 53-51, and win the region 8-AA title in Greensboro.
The Dragons (19-9) will host Kendrick High School (9-17) next week, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the first round of the state playoffs.
Tyler Patrick scored eight points in the final period to power the Dragons to their first lead of the game, 45-44, with less than four minutes to play.
Greene County regained the lead twice. But Satchel Turpin’s basket and a pair of Tay Taylor free throws put the Dragons ahead for good with 32 seconds left on the clock, as the Dragons successfully defended the Tigers' final shot.
Patrick led the team with 15 points. Taylor finished with 13 points, including nine points that stabilized the team in the first half.
Turpin (8), Willie Taylor (4), Jeshua Kidd (5), Isaiah Blake (5) and Roc Young (3) all contributed.
