Social workers salvage students’ educations and sometimes lives

Hundreds of Barrow County school children arrive at school each morning carrying more than backpacks. They also bring from home weighty problems — poverty, homelessness, addiction and even hunger — that threaten to derail both their educations and their lives. Working every day to keep the children on track are three school social workers whose roles have evolved over the years as the social issues facing students have grown more complex.
