A possible rabid raccoon was reported at a Davenport Road in Braselton last week. A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy responded to the address and found the complainant holding a flashlight on the animal that was beside the house curled up in a ball. According to the incident report, the woman said she heard her dogs making a lot of noise outside that wasn’t normal. When she went to check it out, she noticed something moving underneath the porch.
After putting up her dogs, she realized the movement was a raccoon and she couldn’t tell if it was inured or not.
“I threw a stick that landed beside the raccoon and it raised up growling and hissing,” the deputy wrote.
The complainant said she would have already shot it, but that she could not “shoot that good,” according to the report.
She asked the deputy to shoot and said she would dispose of it, adding that there had been a rabies case there before with their dog.
She also said she would contact the Department of Natural Resources if he didn’t want to test the animal.
The report states that the “raccoon was put down and disposed of.”
