The Bethlehem Christian Academy baseball team continued to make a name for itself with a trip to St. Simons during the weekend.
The Knights played three games at Frederica Academy and by the time their on-the-field play was complete, BCA had outscored its opponents 39-5. Perhaps the most impressive win was an 8-5 defeat of Windsor Academy, a team which advanced to the GISA Class AA finals a season ago.
In addition, coach Nick Pou’s team defeated Citizens Christian 18-0 in three innings and Robert Toombs 13-0 in five innings.
“I was pleased with how we did,” Pou said. “There are still some things we have to do in order to get better.”
Niko Mailloux worked four innings against Windsor and did well for his first outing of the season, his coach said. The senior had three strikeouts while allowing one earned run before giving way to Jared Martin who closed the door. Martin finished with three strikeouts and allowed on earned run.
“Windsor is a good team and can really swing the bats,” Pou said. “ We were a little sloppy defensively. However, if we are playing sloppy and still getting wins, then we are doing some things right.”
Consistency is a theme Pou constantly stresses.
“You don’t want to go in a lull,” the coach said. “Even when you get a big lead, you have to keep playing and keep doing what you need to do. The umpires will tell us when it’s time to stop playing.”
At the plate, BCA was led this weekend by Martin, who was 2-for-3 against Windsor with two RBI. Jacob Fincher was 2-for-3 in the game while PJ Klein was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Matt Masters was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run while Brody German was 1-for-1 with a RBI.
Jordan Fountain earned the win against Citizens Christian. He did not allow a hit in the game which lasted just three innings due to the mercy rule.
Mailloux was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Klein was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Masters had a two-run double while Ramon Rivera was 1-for-2 and drove in two runs.
Chance Spratlin was 2-for-3 while Fincher and Fountain were both 2-for-2. Fincher drove in two runs while Fountain had one RBI.
Klein earned the win against Robert Toombs as he recorded 13 strikeouts and allowed just one hit. Masters was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs while Mailloux, Klein, Rivera and Luke Allen all had a hit.
Klein drove in two runs against Robert Toombs.
BCA is scheduled to begin play in Region 1-A Tuesday at home against Nathanael Greene. While the Knights are the clear favorite to win the region, Pou said his team will continue to be tested because the schedule will feature several tough non-region foes in between region games.
BCA is currently ranked No. 1 in GISA Class A and was 3-0-1 entering this week. The tie came against defending Class AAA state champion Tattnall Square last week.
