The annual Georgia High School Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) state wieghtlifting compeition for AAAAA and AAAAAA will be held Saturday, March 16, at Lambert High School.
The Apalachee High School Iron Cats, a defending state champion, has been working throughout the winter to compete, coach Shane Davis said earlier this week.
“The kids have really been working hard,” Davis said. “It is an ongoing process for us. This is all a part of our offseason conditioning. We don’t change anything in terms of what we do for the preparation for the weightlifting event. It’s just more of what we do throughout the year.”
The Iron Cats have been one of the most successful programs since the weightlifting competitions have been held, winning multiple state titles.
In other AHS football news, Davis said spring practice will be held in May although dates have not been finalized at this point. Davis said he has had talks with AHS principal Glenn Wilson about possible dates for spring drills.
“We will make it as late as possible,” Davis said. “We’ll look to finalize the dates soon.”
The Wildcats will once again compete in Region 8-AAAAA next fall.
The Winder-Barrow High School athletes, under the guidance of coach David Wagner, have also competed in the weightlifting competitions in recent seasons, gaining more awards with each year.
Both AHS and WBHS will continue to compete in Region 8-AAAAA during the 2013 football season, now less than six months away.
