Madison County swept Johnson High School on the road last week, with both boys and girls varsity and junior varsity teams winning.
The varsity teams then topped Stephens County Tuesday.
The varsity guys beat Johnson 5-0 and Stephens 4-1, improving to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the region, while the girls topped Johnson 4-1 and Stephens 3-2 to stay undefeated at 5-0, 4-0.
The JV boys blanked Johnson to improve to 4-0, 3-0, while the JV girls won 2-1 to improve to 3-1, 3-0.
“It was the battle against the opponent and the weather,” said Red Raider head coach Keith Strickland of the Johnson matchup. “With a modified line-up –Hayden Colquitt filled in to play his first varsity match due to an injured Ben Strickland, and won easily 6-1, 6-1.”
Trey Morris and the doubles team of Adam Sartain/Hank Sartain continued their dominance by winning their fourth match in a row in straight sets. Koti Nguyen battled for a three-set win after being down the first set and losing the second set.
“On the girls’ side, we had expected more of a battle from Johnson, but our girls played extremely well to take four of the five lines,” said Strickland. “Freshman Maranda Dove continues to impress me – she’s now 4-0 on the season. Morgan Dooley played extremely well coming back from the flu last week. Our doubles teams have gained some confidence and took two solid wins for us.”
VERSUS STEPHENS COUNTY
The weather was better Tuesday, but Madison County was still missing several starters due to illness.
Strickland said both Raider and Indian guys’ squads entered the match undefeated and he knew Tuesday’s showdown could ultimately affect the team’s region tournament standings.
Once again, Madison County came out on top.
“The depth on the boy’s team helped us maintain our hold at the top of the sub-region,” said Strickland.
The coach said Hayden Colquitt and Ben Sartain played great at #2 doubles. The match was Sartain’s first varsity start.
“Trey Morris and Ben Strickland continued their winning ways, ousting their previously unbeaten opponents handily in straight sets,” said Strickland. “Zach Peneguy/Tyler Terrell, #1 doubles, also played well.”
The Lady Raiders also grabbed the win Tuesday.
“We had to shuffle the line up to get the best possible team/combination of players on the court to play as competitive a match as possible,” said Strickland. “KayLee Bates, a seasoned doubles player, took the challenge and played a great match at #2 singles winning in straight sets. Both of our doubles teams played heads-up to earn wins and keep the team unbeaten through the first round of sub-region play.”
Now, the Raider tennis squads will travel to the Granger Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 15-16.
