The Madison County boys tennis team took second place in this weekend’s Granger Invitational.
The Raiders won three of four matches, improving to 9-1 overall on the season (6-0 in the region).
“The boys played some really good tennis and gained a lot of match play experience,” said Red Raider head coach Keith Strickland. “This tournament was especially good for our sophomore guys who are playing varsity for the first time this season.”
Strickland said his guys pulled out a tight match with North Hall, getting some three-set wins.
“We also got a chance to play a region opponent (Lanier) in the semis,” said Strickland, whose team will face Lanier again March 27. “This was good as it gave us some insight about the other side of our region.”
Madison County fell 4-1 to Dunwoody in the tournament finals.
“In the finals, we looked like we ran out of steam,” said Strickland. “Playing four matches in two days is not something that the younger guys were used to. This was the boys’ third time playing this tournament and their first to make the finals. We’ve been third the previous two years.”
The Madison County girls dropped their tournament-opening match 2-1 to Dalton. Strickland said it was a good learning experience.
“Four of the five matches were very competitive,” said the coach. “This match was good for the girls as they head into the second round of sub-region and then the region tournament. The losses they suffered were quality losses. They had the opportunity to play a good team and to learn from the experience and better themselves from that point on.”
Madison County defeated Harris County 4-1 and Callaway 5-0 in the consolation matches to improve to 8-1 overall (5-0 in the region).
Both boys’ and girls’ squads also downed Lumpkin County last week.
