Raphael D. Barnett peacefully went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 9, 2013, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 25, 1927, in Jackson County, the son of William Young and Elbertice Hix Barnett of Commerce. Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Sailors Barnett; sister, Louise Barnett Trotter; and brother, William Barnett.
He was a native of Commerce and a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Okinawa. Upon his return home, he became a successful joint business owner and sole owner of several local grocery stores. Upon retiring from the grocery store business, he endeavored into the banking business for a number of years.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Christina Barnett and Mercer Crook; sister, Donie Barnett Driver; brother, Beeman Barnett; two grandsons, Michael Crook and wife Candice, and Rory Crook and wife Anna; three great-grandchildren, Lorelai Crook, Aubrey Crook, and Riley Crook; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 13, at the First Baptist Church in Commerce.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
