The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrested six people — none of them local — on cruelty to animals charges on Sunday, June 24, in connection with a cockfight at a Hickory Way, Maysville location.
Upon arrival, deputies witnesses several persons standing around a homemade fence with chicken coops all around the property. Several persons immediately fled the scene, but deputies were able to detain six people. Further investigation revealed several dead roosters, spurs and other items related to “chicken fighting.”
Deputies also recovered $1,208 in cash and a quantity of Indian rupees valued at approximately $20. They noted a number of syringes, medications and cages at the scene.
Those arrested were David Castro 31, Lawrenceville; Valentin Castro 42, Buford; Ramiro Delgado 42, Pineville, NC; Feliciano Gaona 37, Washington; Aracely Olea 38, Newnan; and Tomas Rodrigues 31, Athens. They were charged with obstruction and cruelty to animals. Other charges are also pending.
