After initially insisting that he would not resign from his position as senior instructor of the Junior ROTC program at Winder-Barrow High School, Major Thomas Evans has done that. His resignation means that he will not be officially terminated and there will be no public airing of his dispute with school superintendent Wanda Creel.
In a written statement released to the media Friday afternoon, Creel said Evans "requested to be released from his Contract of Employment for the 2013-14 school year. At its meeting on August 14, 2013, the Barrow County Board of Education approved that request."
The statement added: "The administration and Board of Education express their total support for the JROTC program within the School District and especially for the program at Winder-Barrow High School. The program has served and will serve its crucial role in the development of student leaders. The District is committed to assisting in every possible way to provide outstanding opportunities for each of its cadets and students."
