The Banks County High School fast-pitch softball team earned two wins recently in the Lanier Point Invitational Tournament.
BCHS defeated East Hall 8-5 and also recorded a13-2 win against Rabun County.
“We had a good win against East Hall, a region opponent," said coach Tony Bowen.
BCHS played host to region foe Fannin County last Thursday for the first region contest of the season. The teams battled for eight innings before Banks County earned a 6-5 win.
The victory against Fannin County was the first of the season in region play for Bowen’s team.
It’s been a busy stretch early in the season for the Lady Leopards. The team is currently 6-1 in overall and 1-0 in region action.
Fannin County jumped out to a two run lead in the top of the first inning with no runs for the Lady Leopards in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Kennedy got the throw to second base to make the tag for the final out of the top of the second inning. The Lady Leopards went three-up/three-down to finish the second inning.
Fannin County added a run in the third to lead 3-0. Nothing happened at the plate for the Lady Leopards in the bottom of the third inning. Top of the fourth was scoreless for the Lady Rebels but the Lady Leopards scored two runs in the inning to cut the lead to one.
Kaitlyn Stewart got a hit and RBI to tie the score 3-3 in the fifth inning. Fannin County scored one run to take back the lead. The score stayed the same in the sixth inning as the Lady Leopards took to the outfield to hold the Lady Rebels in the final inning. The Lady Leopards held off a possible scoring situation by FCHS to stay one run behind in the top of the seventh inning. BCHS tied up the game with Stewart's, RBI but couldn’t pull ahead in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The game went into the eighth inning and again Fannin County took a one-run lead.
The Lady Leopards got a base hit that turned into a triple on an error by the Lady Rebels. With a runner on third, BCHS pulled out a base hit to win the game 6-5.
Savannah Denton earned the win pitching all eight innings. Shelby Parson scored two of the six runs for the Lady Leopards while Taylor Kennedy, Kaitlyn Stewart, Lindsey Elliott scored one run each. Mallory Parson scored the winning run.
The Lady Leopards took on Region 8-A member Athens Christian School Aug.16 in which BCHS won the game 5-4 in eight innings. Brenna Parson led the team going 4-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Shelby Parson had three at bats with one run, one hit and two RBIs. Mallory Parson pitched the eight-inning game allowing four runs.
The Lady Leopards also beat Clarke Central 19-0 and East Jackson 11-4 to win the Threads Invitational Tournament played in Stephens County. Mallory Parson led the Lady Leopards with three at bats with three runs scored, three hits and three RBIs against Clarke Central. Haley Warner led the Lady Leopards against East Jackson with three at bats with two runs scored on two hits and one RBI. Mallory Parson pitched five innings allowing four runs.
Mallory Parson led the Lady Leopards at the plate with a .583 batting average. She was followed by Brenna Parson with a .474 average and Haley Warner with .435 mark. Taylor Kennedy led the Lady Leopards with a .700 batting average with runners in scoring position. Mallory Parson has pitched for a total of 23 innings and Savannah Denton 19 innings to this point in the season.
The remaining games this fall will be region contests for BCHS. The team will travel to West Hall Thursday.
The Lady Leopards’ lone loss this season came against East Jackson 12-11. Despite losing, BCHS did score six runs in the seventh inning.
"We jumped out in front early and lead for a couple innings until East Jackson's bats got going,” Bowen said. “I was proud of the girls and how they fought back hard in the bottom of the seventh inning.
