The Apalachee High School softball team didn’t play particularly bad Tuesday, but visiting Heritage simply never gave the Lady Wildcats a chance offensively.
AHS managed just one base runner — a two-out single by Kelsie Herbert in the bottom of the fifth — and fell to Heritage 5-0 in region play. The loss overshadowed another quality outing by Lady Wildcat pitcher Becca Meade who recorded five strikeouts and scattered six hits.
“We had trouble catching up at the plate,” AHS coach Mike Cavey said. “We had a few little miscues on defense that cost, but even without those the score would have been 1-0 or 2-0. You have to be able to do something offensively to give yourself a chance. Heritage is going to battle for the top spot in our region.”
The Lady Patriots pushed two runs across in the top of the second and then added two more in the third and one in the fourth.
Meade held Heritage scoreless for four of the seven innings she pitched Tuesday afternoon. and continued her solid performance in 2013. “This is the first region loss for us and hopefully we can learn from it,” Cavey said. “We can still make a good run. We can’t let one game get us down. We have several games in the next few days and everyone is going to get plenty of playing time.”
The Lady Wildcats were scheduled to play Dacula Wednesday (today) and will travel to Brunswick for two games Friday and two more Saturday.
“We think the trip is going to be good for us,” Cavey said. “It will be a good time for team bonding.”
