Braselton Mayor Bill Orr will serve another term, since no opposing candidates qualified in any race by the town’s Wednesday deadline. On the town council will be incumbent Peggy Slappey from District 2, and Rhonda Stites, who will replace Dudley Ray in District 4.
The only contested race so far in Winder is for the at-large council seat currently occupied by Bob Dixon. Nicole Tobias qualified for that race on Tuesday. Incumbents Sonny Morris and Ridley Parrish also have qualified to run for re-election. Elsewhere around the county:
•Auburn: Former mayor Harold Money qualified on Wednesday to run for council, but he withdrew his application on Thursday. The other qualifiers are incumbent councilman Bob Vogel and political newcomer William B. Ackworth.
•Bethlehem: Two competitors for the open Post 3 seat had qualified as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday: Joe Price and C.L. Wood. Post 1 incumbent Tommy Parten also qualified Thursday.
•Carl: Council incumbent James Shedd qualified Wedensday to represent Post 2. The small town's qualifying period ends today, Aug. 29, at 4:30 p.m.
•Statham: Incumbents Betty Lyle, Gayle Steed and David Huth have qualified. No challengers have surfaced.
The opportunity for residents to jump into races in Auburn, Bethlehem, Statham and Winder ends at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
