An elderly Danielsville man was arrested on DUI and other charges last week after he allegedly rammed the back of another vehicle at the red light in Hull.
Richard Charlie Cox, 70, was charged with DUI/drugs, aggressive driving, reckless driving, hit and run; duty of driver to stop at or return to the scene of an accident and following too closely.
On Sept. 7, Deputy Kyle Roberts was dispatched to First Citizens Bank in Colbert to meet with a woman in reference to a two-vehicle accident hit and run. The complainant stated that the wreck actually occurred at the red light in Hull at Hwy. 72 and Glenn Carrie Road. The woman stated that she was sitting at the red light waiting to get a chance to go since there was so much traffic backed up because of the train coming through. She stated that she had to sit at the red light through three or four cycles and that while she was waiting a white Pontiac Sunbird hit her from behind.
She stated that the first hit was very light and she did not know what had happened, but that the Pontiac then hit her again and began revving the engine, pushing her forward out into traffic and almost causing her to hit the vehicle in front of her. She stated that the vehicle then hit her again and began pushing her further into traffic causing her to mash very hard on the brake to keep her from going out into the middle of the intersection.
Officer Roberts noted the woman was driving a green Chevrolet Suburban and that her having a very large vehicle and the offender’s vehicle being small was likely the only thing that kept her from being pushed out into the intersection and possible being hit by on coming traffic. She stated that she got very scared for her and her son’s safety and hit the gas to try and get away, going through the red light and then down Hwy. 72 east bound toward Colbert. She stated the Pontiac then continued following her down Hwy. 72, weaving in and out of traffic, being very aggressive and trying to hit her vehicle again. She stated this continued all the way down Hwy. 72 to Colbert School Road in Colbert. She said that she had called Madison County E-911 when she was leaving Hull and was on the phone with them while this was going on. While Roberts was still in the parking lot of the bank in Colbert talking with the woman, she looked toward Hwy. 72 and pointed at a white Pontiac Sunbird and stated that that was the vehicle. Roberts then activated his emergency equipment and began to follow the vehicle. The vehicle began to speed up and started to pull away from the patrol car. Roberts followed after the vehicle down Hwy. 72 West and as they were approaching H V Chandler Road, the vehicle braked very hard and fast and turned the wheel to the right very sharply, headed toward the guard rail. The driver of the vehicle (Cox) corrected the steering just before striking the guard rail and pulled along side the guard rail off of the roadway.
Roberts then had Cox exit the car, noting that he was stumbling and that his words were slurred.
When asked about the wreck, Cox told officer Roberts that “she wouldn’t go” and had “sat there for three lights.”
Sgt. Michael Moore arrived to back Roberts up and approached the passenger side window of the vehicle to speak with Cox’s passenger. Moore saw the woman slide a pill bottle under her leg. The bottle of pills was taken in as evidence.
Sgt. Moore examined the front bumper area of the Pontiac offender vehicle and could see visible signs of where the offender vehicle struck the victim’s vehicle. Pictures were taken and Cox was taken to jail.
