After week three of the NFL season there are seven teams remaining that are still undefeated at 3-0. Of those seven there are some regulars that most analysts wouldn’t be surprised with, such as the Patriots, Saints, Bears, and Broncos.
But what is surprising is some of the other teams who are undefeated that no one would have seen coming into the season, like the Chiefs and the Dolphins.
But what might be even more shocking than some of these undefeated teams is actually the number of teams that are still winless on the season, a group of teams that includes a handful of surprises as well.
There are six NFL teams that are still winless on the season, they are: the Giants, Redskins, Vikings, Buccaneers, Steelers, and Jaguars. Some of these teams are used to starting the season off 0-3 like Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, but it is very strange to see some of the others that make up this list.
Both the Redskins and the Vikings made it to the playoffs last season but now find themselves in an unfortunate spot to start the new season. RG3 has had some issues on this young season and hasn’t played up to his potential yet, couple that with a tough opening schedule and you have yourselves an 0-3 start for the defending NFC East Champions.
Two teams that missed out on the playoffs last year but were still expecting to have good seasons this year are the Steelers and the Giants who have both failed miserably at the start of the season.
The Giants had a tough loss in week one to the Cowboys before falling short at home to the undefeated Broncos. But what is most disappointing for New York is that this past week they lost 38-0 to the Carolina Panthers.
Pittsburgh has also had their fair share of troubles this season. An atrocious opening loss to the Titans and losses to Cincinnati and Chicago the next two weeks brings the Steelers to their first 0-3 start since 2000.
Tampa Bay and Jacksonville didn’t have high hopes of making the playoffs this season but certainly did not want to start the season 0-3. The question here is which of these winless teams have the best chance to still scrape by and make the playoffs?
The chances are low for any of these teams to make it in, but as we all know absolutely anything can happen in the world of sports.
The Jaguars and Buccaneers are each playing in divisions that are loaded with other playoff contenders and simply won’t make it to the postseason, but most of the other four still have a good shot.
The Giants and Redskins are in the same division and both have a chance to make up some ground. Not to mention that the NFC East is always the craziest division in football, the Cowboys sit at the top at 2-1 and the Eagles follow them at 1-2. So both New York and Washington still have a great shot to make it to the playoffs, but probably only one of them will if either of them can.
Minnesota is playing in a tougher division, the Bears are currently 3-0 while Detroit is 2-1 and Green Bay is 1-2. But the Packers are a much better team than their early record indicates. Anything is possible, but it will be tough for the Vikings to make it back into the postseason.
This leaves us with Pittsburgh who traditionally has a tough division. The Browns are usually irrelevant in the AFC North but the Ravens and the Bengals often times give the Steelers much to fight for. Both Baltimore and Cincinnati are 2-1 on the season while Cleveland is 1-2.
The Steelers have a tough mountain to climb and given their current form it doesn’t seem likely that they will make it to the postseason.
All of these teams are good enough to win some games and some of them might make the playoff race interesting later in the season, but as of now it is pretty unclear if any of them will be able to climb out of the deep 0-3 hole that they are in.
