Traffic could be very heavy in downtown Commerce Friday night, but the vehicles will be unusual.
Gear Jam Drags is teaming up with the Commerce Downtown Development Authority to bring a host of vintage cars into the downtown Friday night.
The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. in conjunction with the Vintage Drags the following day at the Atlanta Dragway.
Since it’s a first-ever event, nobody is quite how many vintage vehicles will cruise into Commerce.
“I think it’s going to be an awesome event,” said Mainstreet manager Denise McKay. “I am excited to partner with Gear Jam in bringing the cars downtown.”
The event will be centered at Spencer Park, and vintage cars will be parked up and down Broad and Elm streets from that point.
“I have no idea how many will come, but I’m expecting a good many,” McKay said.
Jim Davis of Vintage Metal Works, South Broad Street, is coordinating the event. He and other volunteers have made unique plaques from old Georgia automobile tags that will be given to the 20 “favorite” vehicles chose by a unique panel of judges.
“It’s not really a car show,” McKay pointed out. “We’re going to let kids pick their favorite cars.”
The event will also feature a “beer garden” selling beer, wine and margaritas served by the staff of El Parian Mexican Restaurant, and music by Hot Rod Walt and the Psycho-Devilles, a “rockabilly group,” which McKay said has a large following. Stonewall's will sell barbecue during the event.
