A Canadian real estate company planning to develop more than 400 acres along Hospital Road, Homer Road and U.S. 441 north has temporarily withdrawn its rezoning request pending completion of a state regulatory process.
The Walton Group seeks zoning changes on the 266.2-acre tract in the triangle where Homer Road and U.S. 441 meet near the north end of Hospital Road; and for 143.73 acres on both sides of Hospital Road at Homer Road for a mixed-use development combining commercial, single-family residential and multi-family residential projects.
The matter was on the agenda for the Commerce Planning Commission Monday night but chairman Joe Leffew announced that the request was withdrawn pending completion of the DRI (development of regional impact) process under which the plan is submitted to the Northeast Georgia Regional Development Commission for a finding as to whether the project is or is not “in the interest” of the region. The finding is not binding on the city, but the planning commission and city council cannot deal with the issue until the RDC issues its findings.
