The Apalachee High School and Winder-Barrow High School softball teams are set for the state tournament.
Both teams open play in the AAAAA state tournament Wednesday (today) on the road. The AHS Lady Wildcats, who are the No. 3 seed from 8-AAAAA, will face Southwest DeKalb on the road while WBHS, the No. 4 seed, will travel to battle Miller Grove. Games will be at 2 and 4 p.m. The series will be a best 2-of-3 format.
“Southwest DeKalb has good team speed,” AHS coach Mike Cavey said Sunday. “We are still trying to scout them. If we play our game and if Becca (Meade) is on, we should be fine. We will try to counter their speed by keeping them off the bases.”
AHS has met one team goal of qualifying for state, but Cavey said he would like the team to continue winning.
“We have overcome some obstacles this season,” Cavey said. “Our girls have battled. Becca has pitched well and we’ve had some good, timely hits.”
AHS enters the postseason with a 16-12 overall record. The Lady Wildcats finished 6-2 in region play during the regular season.
WBHS upset Flowery Branch in the region tournament and is 12-14 overall. The Lady Bulldoggs were 4-4 in 8-AAAAA during the regular season.
