Murder and feticide warrants have been issued by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the GBI for Jonathan Michael Smith, 34, for the murder of 16-year-old Cheyanne Hair in Jefferson on Wednesday.
"Smith and Ms. Hair moved from Spalding County and were living at the Winder Highway residence when Smith murdered Ms. Hair who was pregnant," said a GBI news release late Friday.
"The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI consulted with Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brad Smith regarding the charges on Jonathan Smith. It is anticipated additional charges may be brought against Smith in this matter."
Smith is currently in the Jackson County Jail on unrelated charges from Spalding County.
Ms. Hair died on Wednesday, December 4, at Athens Regional Medical Center after being transported from 1127 Winder Highway in Jefferson. A 911 call was received requesting medical services at the Winder Highway residence.
Jefferson Police Department initially responded to the Winder Highway location to work the murder investigation. Jefferson Police requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) assist with the investigation. Officials later determined the location was actually in the jurisdiction of Jackson County, therefore the JCSO assumed control of the investigation along with the GBI.
