The 2012 Banks County State Champion Wrestling team has been super busy the past two weeks taking on some of the best competition in the state. The team was 9-2 on the season as of last week with a tough match at Mill Creek and a tournament in Towns County this past weekend.
The Leopards Wrestlers of the Week for the previous week were Dylan Suttles with 10 wins and one loss - The Homer Carver Roofing High School Wrestler of the Week. The Homer Carver Roofing High School Wrestler of the Week is Dylan Suttles with 16 wins and one loss, King of the Mountain Tournament Champion.
The Leopards defeated Clarke Central 60-14, Madison County 66-12 and East Hall 53-20 before heading into the Archer Duals.
"We headed into the tournament all out of sorts,” head coach Kasey Hanley said. “We were missing some starters and having to move wrestlers around to fill gaps."
BCHS took a loss from Nationally ranked 8-AAAAAA Archer High School 62-12. Then took a heartbreaking loss from 6-AAAAAA South Forsyth 33-37.
"We had to forfeit one weight class to them, and bumped around to fill other holes,” Hanley said. “It came down to the last match, one in which we had their guy on his back more than once, we eventually lost the match on a decision.”
The Leopards got back on track taking a 39-35 close win over 4-AAAAAA Marietta, a 66-12 win over 1-AAAAA Harris County. In the final match of the tournament the Leopards won against 7A-AAAA Cambridge 48-25, finishing the day 3-2.
This past weekend, the high school wrestlers competed in two varsity tournaments. The Leopards went to Towns County's King of the Mountains Tournament. The tournament consisted of 21 teams. The Banks County Leopards Wrestling Team set several new records:14 out of 14 won medals, 11 wrestlers were in the finals, and BCHS had eight tournament champions. The Leopards won the tournament with 324 total team points.
Results from the weight class matches were: 106- Matt Lowe - Second Place, 113- Bobby Nguyen - Fourth Place, 120- Dylan Suttles - Champion, 126- Chris McCrackin - Champion, 132- Gabe Espinoza - Second Place, 138- Tony Fultz - Champion, 145- Kyle Ruark - Second Place, 152- Tristan Guthrie - Champion, 160- Wes Faulkner - Champion, 170- Dylan Gouine - Champion, 182- Philip Dean - Champion, 195- Cole Sweeney - Second Place, 220- Matthew Dilbeck - Champion and 285- Jared Slaton - Third Place.
The JV team traveled to Oglethorpe's Patriot Tournament, which was a varsity tournament. BCHS JV won the varsity tournament. Medalist included: 132- Nick Page - Champion, 138- Davis Day - Champion, 152- Chris "Suit" Guthrie - Second Place, 160- Jamie Wood - Third Place, 170- Demetrius Walker - Champion, 182- Zach Walker - Champion, 195- Josh Bello - Second Place and 285- Logan Free - Champion.
