The confidence of the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs basketball team continue to grow.
WBHS earned its third overall and region win of the 2013-2014 season Saturday by defeating county rival Apalachee High School 42-32 on the road.
The game was close throughout and despite the host AHS Lady Wildcats being winless this season, the victory was not an easy thing for the WBHS Lady Bulldoggs.
Shea Mayweather finished with a game-high 18 points to lead WBHS while Adrianna Davis scored nine and Jasmine Lyles added six.
“It was a good team effort,” said Lady Bulldoggs coach Brandon Thomas. “We finished strong in the fourth quarter. We won three of the four quarters and executed down the stretch. We do need to rebound better. That’s something we have to keep working on.”
The Lady Bulldoggs held a one point advantage after the first quarter and at halftime. The lead had been pushed to four points after the third quarter. WBHS would use a 16-10 advantage in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Tia Carter led AHS with 11 points while Kiara Hooks scored six and Anizsah Howard finished with five. Taylor Compton and Sydnie Harrelson both scored three points for coach Gary Compton’s team.
“We played better,” Compton said. “We came out and competed for most of the game. It was one of our better efforts this season.”
Both teams will compete in the East Jackson High School holiday tournament beginning Friday in Commerce.
