A 60-year-old Barrow County man died on New Year's Day in an accident on a remote mountain bike trail at Harbins Park in Dacula. Police identified him as Larry M. Steward of Choctaw Ridge.
According to a Gwinnett County Police Deparment report, emergency responders — including a helicopter, an ATV, a patrol car and a med unit — initially had difficulty getting to the victim because of his remote location. During the half-hour delay, other bikers attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Once fire department personnel arrived at the scene, they determined that Steward had died.
A witness said he and Steward and a third rider came to a portion of the trail called “Rim Bender” that is composed of “two steep humps that descend a hillside,” the police report states.
The first rider made it down safely, but Steward crashed, falling over his handlebars. He was wearing a bike helmet, but when his two friends got to him, he was not breathing and did not have a pulse.
