JEFFERSON High School senior Satchel Turpin scored a total of 49 points last week to lead the Dragons to two road wins over Region 8-AA opponents.
Last Wednesday, the Dragons traveled to Rabun County to square off with the Wildcats.
After a tight first period, the Dragons began to pull away and never looked back as Turpin racked up 26 points, leading Jefferson to a 67-54 win.
Turpin also pulled down 11 rebounds, earning a double-double for the game. Senior Tay Taylor contributed 11 points for the Dragons.
On Friday, the Dragons traveled to Greene County and came away with a commanding 63-52 win over the Tigers. Turpin posted another double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor also had a huge game, leading Jefferson in scoring with 24 points.
Turpin and Taylor’s strong performances couldn’t have come at a better time for the Dragons as wins over Rabun County and Greene County gave Jefferson control of the region standings with a 4-0 (12-4 overall) record.
“We want to be seeded number one in the tournament,” said Dragon head coach Boling DuBose. “In order to do that, we needed to beat Rabun and Greene – both of which will most likely be the strongest competition in the tournament.”
At the beginning of the season, DuBose assumed that Rabun County and Greene County would be the Dragons strongest opposition in the region, and believes road wins over those two teams have put the Dragons in a “good position.”
“It doesn’t mean we can’t lose to any team in our region,” added DuBose. “Everyone has a winning record except Social Circle….But without a doubt, those two are the two best. The fact that we had to play both of them on the road last week was a big challenge for us. I told the kids on Friday night that by the end of the weekend, we would know whether everyone is chasing us the rest of the season, or if we’ll be chasing somebody else.”
With those two Jefferson victories, the rest of the region will now have to play “catch-up.”
Last night, the Dragons extended their region lead after knocking off Oglethorpe County 85-57.
Jefferson only has six more region tilts before the end of the season, four of which are at home.
Friday, Jefferson will host Washington-Wilkes for a Region 8-AA matchup at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Dragons will travel to Apalachee for a non-region tilt at 7:30 p.m.
