Some familiar names are accomplishing some familiar things for the Apalachee High School wrestling team this season.
Seniors Matt Moore, Kevin Bindschutz and Justin Skinner all are hoping to make deep runs in the upcoming state tournament for coach Graham Burns and the Mat Wildcats.
Moore, who was state runner-up in 2013, is undefeated this season with close to 30 wins. Only two of Moore’s opponents have forced him to go the time limit, but he won both of those matches at 220 pounds on major decisions.
Bindschutz wrestling at 170, has only one defeat this season when he lost on points to a defending state champion from Pope High School.
Skinner has been hampered by a knee injury which has lingered since football season. He returned at the recent area duals and won all three of his matches at 160 pounds.
“Justin was in better shape than I thought he would be,” Burns said.
AHS recently finished sixth at the area duals at Clarke Central High School. The Wildcats lost to Heritage 45-32 in the opening round before defeating Winder-Barrow 49-18. AHS then lost a 40-33 contest against Gainesville.
Burns will take his wrestlers to the East Metro Duals this weekend hosted by Loganville High School. Wrestling begins Friday at 5 p.m. and will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
