Barrow County public schools will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 29, due to the winter weather.
"Because of icy road conditions expected for Wednesday, school will be closed for the safety of our students and staff," said superintendent Wanda Creel. "All after-school activities are canceled as well."
Barrow County is under a “Winter Storm Warning.” Snowfall is expected to continue until around 11:30 p.m. with a total accumulation of about 1 inch.
Barrow County Emergency Services is warning citizens to use caution when driving on roadways.
"We have started to receive numerous reports of icy conditions on numerous roads throughout Barrow County," said Lt. Scott Dakin. "We want everyone to realize that as the temperature continues to drop, more patches may occur on roadways. The best thing is to stay home, but if you must travel please slow down and use extreme caution."
Emergency personnel are monitoring conditions and as reports of ice come in are notifying employees with Barrow County's Department of Roads and Bridges who are out salting and sanding the roadways tonight.
At 6 p.m. the Emergency Operation Center was partially activated to help deal with the changing conditions. Personnel from BCES, the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and roads and bridges are staffing the center to handle calls and to direct resources. Barrow County manager Randall Dowling also is at the center.
Atlanta radio stations reported “hundreds” of motor vehicle accidents in the metro area Tuesday afternoon. The Georgia Department of Transportation has issued numerous advisories, asking the public to remain off the roads and to use extreme caution if venturing out.
Tonight's regular meetings of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners and the Barrow County Board of Education both were postponed to Thursday, Jan. 30. The rescheduled BOE meeting will be at 6 p.m., and the BOC meeting will be at 7 p.m.
