Tuesday’s one inch of snow left most of Jackson County closed Wednesday as schools, local governments and some businesses shut down.
Some roads in the county were virtual sheets of ice after temperatures plunged Tuesday night freezing what remained of the snow.
“Be advised the Jackson County Courthouse and all Jackson County Offices will be closed today,” said Sheriff Janis Mangum. “I am getting text messages asking about the roads. They are VERY BAD! DO NOT drive. Call 911 if you need help.”
But some roads were passable, especially along major corridors where DOT crews had spread sand and salt.
County and city public safety workers were on the job Wednesday, but most government offices were closed.
A number of wrecks happened across the county Tuesday evening Wednesday, but no serious injuries were reported. There were 28 wrecks with no injuries and four wrecks with injuries.
EMS director Steve Nichols said most of the wrecks were people sliding off the road into ditches.
