A Commerce police officer had to swerve suddenly recently to avoid a head-on collision with a wrong-way drunk driver on U.S. 441 northbound.
The officer was responding to a call of a truck traveling south in the northbound lane in the area of Tractor Supply Company. The officer turned off Ila Road onto U.S. 441 en route to make contact and reported that he was forced to change lanes to avoid a collision.
The officer did a U-turn and gave chase, pulling the vehicle over near Ila Road. In his written report, the officer said he immediately saw that the driver had a Bud Light beer between his knees, appeared confused, and he said the driver presented him a temporary driving permit issued after a prior DUI (driving under the influence) conviction.
The officer turned the case over to the Georgia State Patrol, which cited the driver for DUI and other offenses.
The report noted that the truck had run over a “Wrong Way” sign on U.S. 441 near Tractor Supply Co.
