The Winder-Barrow High School girls basketball team lost to Gainesville for the third time this season Monday night, but this time the defeat ended the season for the Lady Bulldoggs.
WBHS (10-16) was eliminated by Gainesville 44-27 in the quarterfinals of the Region 8-AAAAA tournament in Loganville.
The loss concludes the 2013-2014 campaign for the Lady Bulldoggs while Gainesville (19-6) advances to the semifinals and is now assured a spot in the upcoming state tournament.
It took a little while for WBHS to get on track Monday night. A free throw by Jasmine Lyles with 40 seconds left in the first quarter was the first time the Lady Bulldoggs dented the scoreboard in Monday’s contest. Gainesville would eventually lead 22-5 at halftime.
In the third quarter, WBHS seemed to find some life playing the Lady Elephants even in the third quarter. Both teams finished with 10 points in the third period.
Coach Brandon Thomas said he did not think having to wait several days for the start of the tournament due to the weather was a factor.
“We actually played better against them in this game,” Thomas said.
Tiera Mayweather led the Lady Bulldoggs with 10 points Monday while Shea Mayweather and Hannah Easterling both scored five. Adrianna Davis added four points.
Gainesville is led by former WBHS girls basketball coach Brenda Hill-Gilmore.
