Apalachee High School advanced to the Region 8-AAAAA championship game with a 64-57 win against Salem Tuesday night.
The Wildcats (23-4) will face Clarke Central Wednesday (today) at 8:30 p.m. in Loganville for the region championship and a No. 1 seed for the upcoming state tournament which begins Saturday.
Trailing 15-10 after the first quarter, AHS took an 18-17 lead on a 3-pointer by Alantae Billings with 5:04 left in the first half. The Wildcats led 26-25 at halftime.
Salem, however, continued to hang around and went on a 7-2 run to start the second half.
Kamar Baldwin finished with 22 points, 18 in the second half. The sophomore also had 14 rebounds and five assists. Baldwin was also 9-of-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Billings added 18 points and seven rebounds while Joey German added 10 points. Kent Knowles scored seven points, all in the second half, with seven assists and five boards.
In the final quarter, the Wildcats were 15-of-18 from the foul line.
It will be the second time in program history that AHS has advanced to the region championship. The first time came during the 2004-2005 season.
AHS will host a state tournament Saturday with the time and opponent to be determined.
