IT’S EARLY, but the Jefferson baseball team is picking up where it left off last year.
The Dragons, 26-4 a year ago, moved to 3-0 with a 9-4 road win over defending Region 8-AAA champion North Oconee with a big sixth inning Saturday.
The Dragons trailed 4-3 after the fifth but pushed across five runs in the top of the sixth to overtake the Titans. Jefferson added an insurance run in the seventh.
Leading hitters were Jake Franklin (2-for-5, double, two RBIs), Hanon Price (1-for-3, 2 RBIs), Christian Hutch (1-for-3, double, 2 RBIs) and Andy Nicolaus (1-for-3, RBI).
The Dragons’ Micah Carpenter started and pitched well, throwing four hitless innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and four walks while striking out six.
Ethan Garner earned the win in relief, working three innings, allowing five hits, two runs (none earned) and two walks while striking out three.
Jefferson faces North Oconee in a rematch Wednesday at home (5:55 p.m.) before a two-game home series this weekend with Tift County (Friday at 5:55 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m.).
