With the exception of a single class, Commerce High School students fared much better than their peers statewide on the winter end-of-course tests, superintendent of schools Joy Tolbert announced last week.
Going over the first semester results at the board’s “work session” on Thursday, Tolbert delivered statistics indicating that more CHS students’ scores fell in the “meets or exceeds” categories in the state-required tests in six of eight classes, matched the state average in one and was below the state in another.
Scores are classified in the categories of “does not meet” expectations, “meets” expectations, “exceeds” expectations and — a combination of the previous two categories — “meets or exceeds” expectations.
CHS students surpassed the state averages in meets and exceeds expectations in Ninth Grade Literature, American Literature, Biology, Physical Science, U.S. History and Coordinate Algebra, while matching the state in Economics and faring worse than the state in Analytic Geometry.
As for the latter class, Tolbert reminded the board of education that the teacher of the 24-student class resigned in mid-semester. “But we do have work to do in Analytic Geometry,” she conceded.
Only a third of that class scored as “meets or exceeds,” compared to the Georgia average of 69 percent.
CHS students fared particularly well in American Literature, where 96 percent qualified as “meets or exceeds, and 47 percent as “exceeds” (compared to 21 percent statewide); in Physical Science, where 97 percent of students met or exceeded expectations and 87 percent were deemed to have exceeded expectations; and in U.S. History, where 83 percent were “meets or exceeds,” but 52 percent qualified as “exceeds.” In Biology, 50 percent of the CHS students were in the “exceeds” category, compared to 29 percent statewide.
