The Commerce High School baseball team went 1-1 last week in its final non-conference games before entering a slate of Region 8-A contests.
On Tuesday, March 11, the Tigers traveled to Banks County to make up a game that was canceled due to weather earlier in the season.
Eight runs in the first three innings allowed Commerce to put the game away earlyi n the 14-3, no-contest victory.
An RBI double by Cal Garner in the first inning and a RBI single by J’Varius Wood in the second inning got things rolling for the Tigers. Commerce racked up five more runs in the top of the third before allowing Banks County its first runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Tigers added six more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the blowout victory over the Leopards.
Wood, Chandler Rodgers and Parker Moon each had two RBIs on two hits. Cal Garner and D.J. Davis batted in one run apiece.
Daniel Streetman was awarded the win for Commerce after allowing no earned runs on three hits in six innings. Streetman fanned six batters.
Last Wednesday, the Tigers fell 17-6 to rival Jefferson.
The game was never in doubt as Jefferson scored six runs on a three-run homer and two singles in the first inning. The Dragons added three more runs in the top of the second before Commerce finally got on the board.
The Tigers showed signs of life after a two-run double by Trevor Johnson in the fourth inning put the score at 10-4, but Jefferson added seven more runs in the final two innings.
Johnson went one-for-two at the plate with three RBIs. Keenan Lord notched two RBIs on one hit, while Caleb Brooks added an RBI in his lone at-bat. Drew Whitfield made it home each of the three times he got on base.
Commerce opened Region 8-A play on Tuesday as the Tigers traveled to Towns County. Details were unavailable at press time. Commerce heads to Pinecrest Academy on Thursday to take on the Paladins at 4:30 p.m.
