The Madison County girls’ soccer team downed Clarke Central 2-0 Tuesday night and Lumpkin County 1-0 Friday, improving to 8-1 on the season.
Alyssa Danyale Duncan scored on a one-on-one with the keeper in the first half against the Lady Gladiators and with two minutes left to go, she scored a header goal off of Kerry Huycke’s corner kick. Kimberly Cooper and the defense received the shutout in goal.
The win followed a 1-0 victory Friday over Lumpkin County. Huycke scored the lone goal with 3:35 left to play in overtime. Cooper and the defense recorded the shutout.
“We are continuing to make strides on the team and be successful,” said Lady Raider head coach Molly McCarty. “Lumpkin County, coming in, was second in the region. We knew that we had to play the best game of the season in order to beat them. We went to overtime tied 0-0. We possessed the ball more than they did the entire game and made attempts at scoring but just couldn’t finish. Our defense was amazing and we dominated the middle… With 3:35 left in the second overtime, Chelsea Beard threw the ball on a throw-in to Isabel Edwards who was behind Lumpkin’s defense. The keeper came out and missed the ball. Kerry Huycke, who was in perfect position centrally, laid the shot into the open goal for us to go up 1-0.”
That goal was Huycke’s fourteenth of the season and she officially broke the MCHS girls’ soccer record of most goals in a single season, which was held by Amber Hill, class of 2008, in the 2006 season with 13 goals.
“But it was the overall team that won the game,” said McCarty. “Everbody played as a unit and as a team. Leading up to the game, we drilled the ‘underdog’ mentality into them and it worked!”
Cooper, goalkeeper, and the defense recorded the fourth shutout on the season and third in a row.
The girls followed that win with another victory Tuesday.
“We dominated the possession and dropped our defense into low pressure to stop any type of attack against Central,” said McCarty. “The second half, we played into their game but still dominated the ball. Central’s keeper, by far the best one we have seen this season, made some great saves on shots that were very good. We outshot them 18-5.”
With 2:35 left to play in regulation, Huycke’s corner kick was head into the net by Duncan, who had 10 shots on goal. Cooper and the defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season and fourth straight.
“At this point, we are 8-1 (9-1 with scrimmage) for the season,” said McCarty. “We have outscored our opponents 29-9 and outshot them 189-75. You don’t get what you wish for but what you work for.”
Also this past week, the junior varsity girls tied Johnson 0-0 and beat Banks County 4-1 this past week. Leah Gerring, Angel Cochran, Lauren Chitwood and Morgan Butler scored goals against Banks County.
The middle school girls defeated Hart County 5-0 Tuesday. The MCMS girls have shut out their opponents in all but 1 game this season. They will have their championship tournament this weekend.
