THE JEFFERSON girls’ soccer team has designs on winning the Region 8-AA title, but the road will have to go through Union County.
In a battle of unbeatens, the Lady Dragons (3-0-1, 3-0) face the Lady Panthers (5-0-2, 2-0) Friday night on the road at 5:30 p.m.
“Union is a tough game for us,” coach Todd Parker said. “We’re playing on their field. They have turf. They’re used to it. The big thing is just to keep us moving forward.”
Jefferson beat Union County 2-1 last year, but Parker noted that the game was a struggle.
“It seems like last year when we played Union County, we played defense,” Parker said. “We didn’t play offense.”
Jefferson heads into the game coming off a 4-0 win this past Friday night, led by three goals from Kayla Brown.
With Jefferson playing a regular season game in Memorial Stadium for the first time, Brown gave the Lady Dragons a 2-0 halftime lead with scores in the fourth minute and sixth minute.
She capped her three-goal night with a score in the 56th minute. The victory improved Jefferson to 3-0-1 on the year and 3-0 in region play.
“Kayla — her foot skills are awesome,” Parker said. “She knows how to handle the ball. If she’s up front, she’ll take it in and she’ll take the shots.”
Parker added, “Kayla can make the ball sing. She really can. She and also Stephanie (Lamm) can kick.”
Lamm provided the Lady Dragons’ only other score, with her goal coming in the 42nd minute.
Meanwhile, goalie Emma Pruitt recorded the Dragons’ second shutout of the year.
“Emma Pruitt has played her best game yet for me … awesome game,” Parker said. “We’ve been practicing on catching the ball and she’s doing a very good job.”
Parker added that defenders Kylee Clay and Isabella Hisky “played great in the center and that’s what we needed.”
Both the Jefferson boys’ and girls’ soccer programs usually play home games at the Jefferson Recreation Department, but both teams were able to celebrate Senior Night by hosting the game at Memorial Stadium. Parker called the atmosphere “awesome.”
“With the crowd, you can’t beat it,” he said. “Especially with the support with Jefferson.”
