The Industrial Development Authority board expects to receive an answer on a $1.5 million grant/loan package next month from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority.
Executive director Marvin White said the package includes a $500,000 grant and a $1 million loan at 1.4 percent interest.
The authority plans to use the funds to expand county water lines along Brewer Phillips Road to Booger Hill Road; from Charlie Bolton Road to the Athens-Clarke County line; along Hwy. 72 to Isabella’s Place and to finish up lines along Virginia Lane in Hull.
“This is probably the best one (loan/grant package) we’ve ever done,” board chairman Bruce Azevedo said.
White agreed, saying it would be the most grant money the county has received for such a project.
The board also noted that things are “picking up” around the county and that water income is increasing.
White said several businesses in Madico Park are expanding.
On a related note, utility director Steve Shaw reported that the water department billed 919 water customers in March with gallons 7.7 million in water usage.
He said there are approximately 12 new water taps in the process, or waiting to be done.
