The Jefferson boys’ soccer season came to a close on Thursday as the Dragons were eliminated from the Class AA state playoffs in a home loss to Lovett.
The Region 8-AA champion Dragons had a hard time applying pressure through most of the first half, while Lovett managed to take several shots on the Jefferson goal.
Jefferson goalkeeper Robert Morsut racked up a handful of saves before the Lions’ forward scored the lone goal of the night. The goal came on a perfectly set-up assist in the 26th minute.
The Lions passing accuracy kept the Dragons on their toes for the remainder of the first half of play, but momentum shifted after the break. The Dragons took multiple chances on the goal in the second half, while applying much more defensive pressure.
But ultimately, Lovett held off the Dragon charge to seal a 1-0 victory and advance to the second round of the state playoffs.
“We played really well on defense,” said Dragon head coach Sean Malone. “(Robert Morsut) stepped up again this game. They got a goal there in the middle of the first half and we had a hard time coming back from it.”
While Malone admits the loss was disappointing, he certainly wouldn’t say that about the 2014 season – a season where the Dragons posted a perfect 7-0 region record and earned the 8-AA championship.
“It’s beyond a success,” he said. “My past seniors haven’t been able to win games like they’ve won this year. They deserved every minute of it. We wish we could have taken them a little bit further – we wish we could have gotten a couple games deeper into the playoffs. But overall, it was an extremely successful season for Jefferson boys’ soccer.”
