Enthusiasm is the buzzword right now for Winder-Barrow High School football.
The Bulldoggs finished their first week of spring practice Friday and new head coach Heath Webb said he came away with a “really good impression.”
“It’s not coach speak by any means,” Webb said. “I am more encouraged now than during our offseason workouts. The kids are embracing the change. The enthusiasm and energy have been awesome. Our coaching staff is doing a great job of raising the bar.”
During the second week of spring drills, the new head coach said he wants his players to become more polished at their positions. The players spent the first four days of spring practice working on both sides of the football.
Last Thursday night after practice, the coaches met and decided who would be best suited for offense and who would be best suited for defense.
An abbreviated scrimmage was held Friday to allow coaches to watch film of the players in their new positions.
“We want to be fundamentally sound,” Webb said. “We are now going to see who can be in our starting 22.”
Scrimmages are set for Friday beginning with the rising ninth graders at 6:30 and the varsity at 7:30 p.m. A football alumni BBQ is planned prior to the scrimmages as Webb looks to welcome past players into the current program.
Webb has continued working on his coaching staff. Naji Lyon will be the team’s offensive coordinator. Lyon arrives from Flowery Branch High School where he worked with Webb. Lyon was also part of Webb’s coaching staff at North Paulding High School.
Other coaches are set to be on board, but are awaiting official approval from the Board of Education.
Webb has retained Van Samples, who coached the defensive line last season. Devon Allison also returns and will focus on cornerbacks this season after working with the secondary in 2013.
Luther Price, who previously worked with the program until 2012, will return and coach the outside wide receivers.
Elton Lynn will continue to coach the freshman team along with Russell Spicer, Paul Nelson and Brian Evans
WBHS will open the 2014 season against Jefferson High School.
