The Bethlehem Christian Academy baseball team will look to earn back-to-back state titles beginning this week as the GISA Class A playoffs begin.
The Knights, who captured another region title last week, is a No. 1 seed and is guaranteed at least two home playoff series. As in previous years, the GISA state baseball players will last four rounds. BCA defeated David Emanuel last spring for the championship. Each round is a best-of-three format.
“It is good to repeat as region champions,” coach Colby May said. “We treated Friday as a playoff series since we will play doubleheaders in the postseason. We always try to treat every game as a playoff contest in terms of importance. We play our best starting nine and then get others worked into the game if possible.”
BCA dispatched of an overmatched John Hancock Academy team in a home doubleheader Friday. The Knights won 16-0 in the first game in four innings and then took a 10-1 in four innings in the nightcap. While the second game was not within the perimeters of the mercy rule (15 runs after three innings or 10 runs after five innings) John Hancock conceded the second game after four innings trailing by nine runs.
P.J. Klein threw a no-hitter in the opener while Jacob Fincher, Luke Allen, Jacobs Walls and Ryan Whiting helped lead the offense.
Caleb Hopkins, a sophomore, earned some key game time on the pitcher’s mound in the second game allowing only one hit.
BCA closed out the regular season earlier this week with non-region games against Monsignor Donovan and Loganville Christian Academy. The LCA Lions are a AAA team.
“It’s good to play them again right before we enter the playoffs,” May said. “Good competition only helps us at this point.”
The Knights defeated Monsignor Donovan Monday 19-3 and traveled to Loganville Christian Academy Tuesday falling 5-4. LCA scored all five of its runs in the first inning and then held on for the win. LCA finished 7-1 in Region 1-AAA and will compete in the playoffs at that level.
