JEFFERSON’S girls’ golf team improved its score at sectionals by 31 strokes over its performance at region and hopes that steady play continues on at state Monday.
The Lady Dragons will play at Pointe South Golf Course in Hephzibah.
“That performance was much more in line with their averages and prior performances during the year,” coach Tom Parker said of the team’s sectional round.
Jill Pratt fired a 39 on the back nine to lead Jefferson at sectionals with an 87. Madison Cornes shot a 90 to compliment Pratt’s performance. Caitlin Cantrell carded a 97, which Parker said shows the depth the team has — especially with moving up to Class AAA this year.
Though the team is young, the goal is to finish in the top five at state Monday.
“We only have sophomores and freshmen on the six-player girls’ team,” Parker said. “Of the six, one is a freshman, two have played for a year, two started playing this year, and one is a sophomore. Therefore, the leadership roles of the girls took some time to work themselves out.”
