IN SEARCH of the chance to play quarterback sooner rather than later, former Jefferson standout Bryant Shirreffs will transfer from N.C. State.
Shirreffs has not yet selected a new destination. He will take the next two to three weeks to explore his options, according to his father.
“He’s got several options,” John Shirreffs said. “It’s just a question of visiting and seeing which he cares to choose.”
John Shirreffs said it was unfortunate that things didn’t work out at N.C. State for his son.
“He loved the place and loved his teammates,” he said. “He really enjoyed being part of the program.”
Shirreffs, who helped lead Jefferson to the 2012 Class AA state title, signed with N.C. State after totaling 3,787 yards of offense and 39 touchdowns as a high school senior, earning Georgia Offensive Player of the Year honors. He appeared in nine games as a true freshman at N.C. State, rushing 34 times for 158 yards.
Shirreffs’ father preferred not to say yet which schools his son is considering now.
“The main thing is that he’s going to explore the next two to three weeks to figure out where (to go),” he said.
University of Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett is the presumed starter this fall at N.C. State, where he has two more years of eligibility. Rather than bide his time behind Brissett, Shirreffs is in search of a situation in which he can play quarterback sooner.
“If you want to wait, you wait,” John Shirreffs said. “If you don’t, then you look elsewhere. Bryant’s a football player and wants to play football.”
Shirreffs can play immediately if he transfers to an FCS school. He’ll sit out a year if he transfers to an FBS school. Academics will weigh heavily in the decision. Shirreffs was named to the All-ACC academic team with a 3.7 grade point average.
Shirreffs, who finishes up with classes at N.C. State this week, will move back home, where he’ll remain until he selects his next college destination.
“We’ll be jumping around the next two to three weeks (taking visits) and hopefully have a decision thereafter,” John Shirreffs said.
