A Jefferson toddler received a new heart on Father’s Day. Jax Mariotti, who had been awaiting a heart since Feb. 25, unexpectedly received news of a donor heart the day before.
“It was an amazing day and an unforgettable Father’s Day for his Daddy!” the family wrote on the toddler’s care page.
Jax’s mother, Danielle Mariotti, said she got the call at about 6 p.m. on Saturday.
“We had a lot of emotions,” she said. “It was kind of surreal. It was exciting. As soon as I saw the number I knew and I looked at (his dad) and he knew. It was wonderful.”
Less than two days after the Sunday morning surgery, Jax will remain in ICU until he is moved to the “step down” unit. “Yesterday was really hard,” said Danielle. “He had a lot of sedatives and pain medications.”
But things started getting better. By Tuesday, he was “doing really well,” his mom said. “He’s eating and that’s awesome. It was the first time he wanted food.”
