A 14-year-old has been arrested and charged as an adult after allegedly burglarizing and sexually assaulting a woman in her 70s in the Hull area.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the Hull area in reference to a burglary and possible rape. Deputies talked to the victim and a witness and obtained a description of the suspect.
Upon search of the area, the suspect, Elvis Lewis, 14, was found on the next street over from the scene.
He was detained at that time, transported to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and charged as an adult with burglary, aggravated assault and criminal attempt to commit rape. Lewis is being detained in the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.
Sheriff Kip Thomas said the Lewis’s family lived in the area of the victim. Thomas said a first hearing was held Tuesday and that another will be held within the next 10 days to determine whether Lewis will be tried in juvenile court or superior court as an adult. The sheriff said his department is pushing to have him tried as an adult due to the severity of the charges.
