The Barrow Journal earned 10 awards from the Georgia Sports Writers Association for the 2013 calendar year.
The paper won first place for Best Special Section for its 2013 High School Football Preview. The section focused on the “Unsung Heroes” of local football teams. In the overall Best Sports Section category, the Journal won second place.
Jessica Brown swept the Best Photo category winning first, second and third. Bown’s first place photo was titled “Soccer Rivalry” from a girls soccer match between Winder-Barrow High School and Apalachee High School.
The second place photo was from a WBHS competition cheerleading event titled “Cheer for the home team.” The third place picture was from Bethlehem Christian Academy celebrating its state baseball title in 2013 titled “Victory Celebration.”
Chris Bridges earned first place for Best Sports Column for a piece on former Bethlehem Christian Academy baseball coach Nick Pou and his devotion to his family. Bridges also won third place for column writing for a column about the Winder-Barrow High School football team needing a victory in its season opener for the 2013 season.
Bridges also won second place for Best Local Feature Story about the formation of a new professional wrestling promotion.
In the Local News Story category, Bridges won second place for a story about Ron Garren returning to coach the Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team and third place for a story about Nick Pou leaving BCA.
Judges included Ken Burger, former sports editor, Charleston News and Courier; Mike Griffith, former president, Football Writers Association of America; Gene Wojciechowski, ESPN and ESPN The Magazine; and Bob Gillespie, former sports writer, The Columbia State.
The awards presented by the GSWA were in addition to the sports honors the Journal received from the Georgia Press Assocation for 2013.
