Jackson County will soon become the setting of a treasure hunt as almost 200 geocachers make their way to the area Saturday.
With over 180 people coming to the upcoming Jackson County Heritage GeoTrail kickoff at 9 a.m. at the Crawford W. Long Museum, the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce announced that there will be 100 additional commemorative coins available.
The first 200 cachers to complete the hunt will receive the coins, which the chamber’s Melissa Britt says are coveted keepsakes for cachers.
There are 30 cache sites throughout the county. As cachers find each site using their GPS coordinates, their passport will be stamped.
Chamber leaders say both national and international participants have confirmed that they will be at the kickoff event. In addition to bringing business to the county for the weekend, leaders hope the trail will continue to bring in guests throughout the years.
The kickoff is planned on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Crawford W. Long Museum. The trail will open at 10 a.m.
