After a somewhat heated back-and-forth with some members of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners during their June 24 meeting, sheriff Jud Smith will present an outline showing why he needs additional funding in numerous areas at the July 8 BOC meeting.
Smith told the BOC last week that an additional $457,000 is needed to fund areas such as fuel, fleet maintenance, feeding of prisoners and overtime pay. The sheriff said his budget for the current fiscal year was cut more than $775,000 by former county manager Jock Connell.
“I am going to present to them what I originally asked for and what I was given,” Smith told the Barrow Journal earlier this week. “I am also going to show them all of my current line items and what I have left to spend. I will also give them the time line of how we reached this problem.”
The BOC voted 4-3 to deny the BCSO the additional funding on June 24.
